I considered goi...Thanks for your kind words, Greg. I considered going more into the depth that your basic paths for gaining spiritual knowledge included but I decided it warranted its own separate talk/posting. You certainly covered the highlights.

Satan is very good at creating convincing substitutes. I think it is also a matter of perspective. If you haven’t received the profound spiritual knowledge that comes from an initial testimony gained via the Holy Ghost, you have nothing to compare your spiritual knowledge against. Your experiences aren’t going to be that different than anybody else you know. The unmistakable confirmation of truth that actual revelation conveys via the Holy Ghost bestows is undeniable and serves as a benchmark for all other spiritual knowledge gained in the future. Most people simply don’t have that.

I think we are also loathe to part ways with beliefs that are comfortable and we are heavily invested in. We keep insisting they are good seeds while harboring unexpressed personal doubts. Shedding them leaves us vulnerable and adrift. Embracing new beliefs is frightening and destabilizing.

President Hinckley acknowledged that truth is everywhere and everyone needed to bring the truth they had with them and we would give them more.

You’ve hit on a perplexing problem about having the right seeds/beliefs. If they were easy and easily identifiable, we wouldn’t be required to live by faith.

You can’t convince someone to try a different seed. That’s up to them with the nudging of the Holy Ghost. That’s why missionary work is so darn difficult.

I’ve often thought that philosophers are simply trying to explain spiritual things with secular terms and concepts which is extremely difficult but I give them credit for trying.

I would say that there is personal truth or “my” truth as you phrase it. For example, I think the conviction that one needs to pursue a particular occupation or passion because you are convinced this is the life Heavenly Father wants you to pursue would be accurate and something only you could possibly know or be convinced of.

Alma sermon may have been suitable for his audience. We don’t know what scripture they had access to. However, you are right, it’s not necessarily a complete answer for those who don’t believe in the Bible or even those who rely on it exclusively for scriptural guidance.
Kristahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07344163281646499679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1232284755689004418.post-29531931491419670782022-11-04T21:05:33.525-04:002022-11-04T21:05:33.525-04:00I am tech savvy and know how to use all these tool...I am tech savvy and know how to use all these tools. But we have many people in our stake and ward (including many in leadership positions) who are adamantly opposed to using these tech tools. (Tech is evil, I am already overwhelmed by apps and don't want more, etc.) Spotty implementation means that these resources are unreliable, so that even those who would like to use these tools tend to avoid doing so.Scott Hinrichshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11831447472339880148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1232284755689004418.post-90010662469844003622022-01-19T02:30:29.567-05:002022-01-19T02:30:29.567-05:00I am sorry you and your husband went through these...I am sorry you and your husband went through these experiences in the temple. I'm interested in your thoughts on some important related questions.

To flesh out the "spiritual epistemology" a little more, Alma 32 seems to provide the basic methodology for gaining spiritual knowledge: (1) developing a desire to believe, (2) planting the seed (believing the statement of truth and not "cast[ing] it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord"), (3) the "swelling" of the seed ("swelling motions" in the heart, i.e., the Spirit telling one's heart that the seed or word is good or true), (4) the seed sprouting and beginning to grow, bringing "enlightenment," enlarging the soul, becoming "delicious," which brings spiritual "knowledge," at least to that point in that thing, and making faith "dormant" in that thing, in other words, a witness through the Spirit of God that the seed or word is true, (5) continuing to exercise faith and patience in nurturing the fledgling tree, "nourish[ing] it with much care," giving diligence and heed to the word, study, prayer, obedience, and all things that strengthen faith, and (6) enjoying the fruit of the tree, which fruit "is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweeet," in other words, feasting on the love of God, which Nephi taught is the most sweet and the "most joyous to the soul." I realize this is far from perfect and could be greatly improved, but it's sufficient for purposes of my questions.

Given what Alma said, why do so many people of different religions seem to have the same type of experience with very different and irreconcilable beliefs? They feel convicted in their hearts; they feel "enlightened," even though they believe very different things that can't all be true, e.g., disparate beliefs about the afterlife. We could even expand it to include philosophies. There are lots of "seeds" in the world, different ideas, beliefs, statements of what this person or that believes to be "truth." Alma said that if a seed isn't good or true, it will not grow, so it can safely be cast out. But there are many different world religions with lots of heartfelt adherents and many different philosophies with large followings. Why, after planting their particular "seeds," didn't they just fail to grow at all and the associated religions or philosophies wither away? I suppose part of the answer is that there is probably some truth in every religion and every philosophy. But I don't think that can be the whole answer, especially for major questions with disparate beliefs. If different people can plant a wide variety of irreconcilable "seeds" or beliefs, and those seeds will grow at least to some extent, how can anyone be certain of having the right seeds/beliefs? And how can one person ever convince another to try a different seed? That is one reason many philosophers say "the truth of religion is its utility," not its Truth. There is no ultimate "Truth," only useful belief. Or people talk about "my" truth.

After Alma concluded his sermon, he perceived that the "great question" that was in the minds of those who heard him was, what is the seed we should plant, how do we plant it, and is the word in the Son of God or not, in other words, is that the seed we should plant? The emphatic response was, "Yes!" Look at the scriptures, which testify of Him. That's not necessarily a complete answer to those, for example, who don't believe in the Bible.

Thoughts?Greg Hesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16982901258065453010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1232284755689004418.post-55675183005346355502020-10-20T17:48:56.329-04:002020-10-20T17:48:56.329-04:00This is great. Our ward is a newlywed/nearly-dead ward in an older part of town. It is the most welcoming ward I have ever attended. People who move in all comment on that as well - they have never been so welcomed into a ward. And, looking at all of those questions you posed, I answered no to all of them. Only one of them came close. I wish more wards were like my ward. But, as long as we have zoning laws that make our neighborhoods homogenous, that might not happen. In the meantime, my advice to young couples is to move to an older neighborhood where they will find all kinds of people in their ward. Life is better there.Supplanter No Surnamehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13311930944328082256noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1232284755689004418.post-36116545803203097152020-05-16T18:24:30.128-04:002020-05-16T18:24:30.128-04:00Krista, thank you for sharing Greg's story, yo...Krista, thank you for sharing Greg's story, your insights, and tribute to your "practically perfect" husband, companion, and friend, Greg Fred Cook...

I'm grateful that we met in person at least once, relatively early in your marriage. Thanks for your communications over your 22 years of marriage to this amazing man. I treasure my friendship with Greg, especially his assistance with painting and several projects at my home, after being left a widow in 1989. We lived in Markle, Indiana, and were part if the Huntington Ward. Greg was thoughtful and enjoyed time with my children, when he painted a bedroom.

It was a joy to be able to encourage one another by phone, over the many years we were both single...

I hope that we can continue our friendship, Krista, as I know the loneliness of living single for 28 years.
